When Monty had meningitis
This area offers a simple printable cartoon story explaining what can happen to child staying in hospital with mild meningitis.
‘When Monty had meningitis’ is a book written by the meningitis Trust to help children understand their experience of meningitis and the associated hospital experience. It was also designed to empower parents to help their children and explore and express their feelings in a safe environment. We offer it to teachers as a tool to use in group or one-one discussion.
The illustrations shown have been taken from the book where you meet Monty, his Mummy and Daddy, and older sister Molly. The outline of the original story is told below.
The story begins with Monty looking forward to a fishing trip, but rather than waking early with excitement Monty is still in bed. When his Mummy opens the curtains Monty’s eyes hurt, he’s feeling poorly and has a temperature. Monty doesn’t want any breakfast so his Mummy takes him to see the doctor, she gives him some medicine to make him feel better. Monty does not seem to get any better and his parents call the doctor, when she visits Monty is very poorly and needs to go to hospital straight away. The hospital is very busy and noisy, and Monty is frightened, his parents are very worried because they love him very much.
The doctors try to find out what is making Monty poorly and look at his throat, put a special tube for medicine into his hand and put a bandage around it to keep the tube safe. The doctors decide that Monty has meningitis and is very poorly; he will need to stay in hospital and is taken to the children’s ward. Monty’s parents stay with him while he’s in hospital and bring his favourite toys. A nurse puts medicine in Monty’s special tube everyday to help him get better; they check his temperature, pulse and blood pressure regularly. Monty starts to feel better and his sister and Gran are able to visit, they even bring him a present for being so brave. Monty is well enough to go home, and he thanks the doctors and nurses for looking after him.
The story ends with Monty leaving hospital and leaves the ending open to allow the opportunity for discussion of after-effects and recovery.
